Selling Used College Text Books

  • To sell used text books online, check out Ecampus. Most college bookstores will buy back books at the end of the semester, but don't forget to do some comparison selling before you hand over your used text books. Check out the prices at Ecampus - Sell Your Used Text Books page first. All you have to do is enter the ISBN number and you can find out if they are interested in buying your books, and if so, what their offer would be. One advantage to using Ecampus over auctioning off you books on Ebay or using the Amazon marketplace, is that you don't have to wait for a seller to come along before you can get cash for your books. If they are interested in what you have, they Ecampus folks will buy your book directly from you.

However, if Ecampus or one of the other online college book stores doesn't have a demand for your books, you can try auctioning them on Ebay.

  • Ebay has some free features that make it especially easy to sell your books. All you have to do is enter the ISBN number of your book into their form box, and they can programmatically fill in your listing with item information and a stock photo. (Besides books, this feature is also available for movies, music and video games.) You can use their service to develop a first cut of your listing, and then customize it with your own additional description information. This service is also available at www.half.com, Ebay's sister web site for fixed priced sales.

I did a test run at their new listing service by typing in the ISBN number of a book I had laying around my desk, and the service did work well. My faux listing in fact was returned with a graphic of my book and all of the correct descriptive information.

  • Amazon also has a marketplace where you can sell used books, including text books, online. They have the same feature available on Ebay where you enter the ISBN number and your listing gets prefilled with some basic product information. Amazon's fees, as of this writing, are a commission of $0.99 plus 15% of your sale price, and credit to cover shipping costs. If your text books are are heavy, note that the Amazon shipping credit may not be enough to cover the extra costs, so you would have to build the extra shipping costs for heavy books into the sales price.

Economists report that a college education adds many thousands of dollars to a man's lifetime income--which he then spends sending his son to college. - Bill Vaughn
